39 Beautiful Beaches with Black Sand in the US and Beyond

Looking for beaches with black sands? After recently visiting a black sand beach, I had to research how many more there were – and I was shocked at how many I found!

A beach is a pretty magical place, right? But a BLACK sand beach? Now that’s something truly special. I recently discovered there’s a black sand beach just an hour away from me in California, so naturally, I had to drop everything and check it out. Because who wouldn’t want to trade their regular sunbathing for an Instagram-worthy experience?

The only other black sand beach I’ve visited was during my trip to Maui on the iconic Road to Hana. And let me tell you, there’s something undeniably different about standing on black sand. It’s like the universe decided to add a little drama to the beach scene. The colors are richer, the atmosphere feels more serene, and there’s this intense calm that just washes over you.

Curious about black sand beaches, I went down a rabbit hole online and discovered there are a lot around the world—who knew? Just in the U.S., there are 12! Plus so many more in Oceania, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia.

I only write about US beaches, but there are so many beautiful black sand beaches around the world that I had to tell you about all of them!

So, if you’re ready for a little adventure and volcanic rock, keep reading for a list of magical black sand beaches all over the world.

Key Takeaways

  • There are beaches with black sands all over the world. They are black due to the erosion of volcanic rock which breaks down into fine, dark sand over time.
  • The black sand beaches in the US are in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, California, and Alaska.
  • Internationally, there are black sand beaches in the Caribbean, Central America, Oceania, Asia, and Europe.

Notes about Black Sand Beaches

  • Black sand can get very hot, so be sure to wear comfy sandals or shoes to protect your feet.
  • Since it’s made from volcanic rock, you might find some tiny pebbles mixed in with the sand.
  • While a few of the beaches on this list have dark black sand throughout, most have grayer dry sand that transitions to black closer to the water’s edge.

Hawaii

1. Kehena Beach, Big Island

  • Lush, wildlife
  • Hike in
  • Clothing Optional
  • No facilities
Kehena Beach, also called Dolphin Beach, is a secret paradise on Hawaii’s Big Island. It’s a tiny stretch of black sand made from lava that flowed into the ocean years ago. Surrounded by lush green trees and coconut palms, it feels like heaven… but there’s a catch—you have to hike down a steep cliff to get there, so wear your walking shoes. People come here to relax and enjoy the sun. But the real stars of the show are the dolphins. They love playing around in the waves, so keep an eye out for them. Just be careful of the strong currents!

If the sand gets too hot, you can relax in the shade under the coconut trees.

8. Playa Negra, Vieques

  • Hike in
  • Photo-worthy
  • No facilities
  • Wildlife
Playa Negra is considered one of the most stunning beaches in Vieques, an island off the coast of Puerto Rico. It’s formed by the black sands that wash down from Monte Pirata during heavy rains, so depending on when you visit, the beach can be completely black or have swirls of white sand mixed in. Getting there requires a stroll through a shallow stream so wear protective shoes.  Swimming can be tricky with the rough waves and rocky bottom but horseback riding is popular here. And just to warn you, the black sand here is super fine and has a way of sneaking into everything, so it can be hard to clean off!

9. Black Sands Beach, Sausalito

  • Hike in
  • Photo-worthy
  • Lush
  • Restroom, parking lot
Just across the Golden Gate Bridge about 10 miles from San Francisco, you’ll discover Black Sands Beach—a rare black sand beach in the continental U.S. This narrow strip of sand, framed by towering cliffs and rugged coastline is absolutely picturesque. While this beach is perfect for a unique photo op and soaking in the scenery, swimming here is not recommended due to strong currents and pounding surf. And just a heads up: one end of the beach is clothing optional, so you might want to be prepared for that! Getting to the beach involves a steep hike down a path from the parking lot, but the views going down are amazing.

FAQs: Black Sand Beaches

Where is a beach with black sand?

Black sand beaches can be found all over the world, primarily in regions with volcanic activity. In the US, the most notable place is the Big Island of Hawaii. In addition to Hawaii, you can find them in Puerto Rico, California, and Alaska. Internationally, there are black sand beaches in the Caribbean, Central America, Oceania, Europe, and Asia.

Which Caribbean island has black sand beaches?

Several Caribbean islands have black sand beaches. Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, and Martinique each have black sand beaches. Additionally, Vieques, a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico, features the popular Playa Negra.

What causes black sand beaches?

Black sand beaches are primarily formed from volcanic activity and erosion. When volcanic rock erupts, it can shatter into tiny fragments, including basalt, which is a dark-colored volcanic rock. Over time, ocean waves and currents wear down these fragments, creating fine black sand. Additionally, beaches near areas with volcanic activity can accumulate black sand from the weathering of surrounding rocks.

Are black sand beaches hotter than regular sand beaches?

Yes! Black sand tends to absorb more sunlight and heat compared to lighter-colored sands. This can make black sand beaches significantly warmer, especially during peak sunlight hours. If you plan to visit, it’s a good idea to wear flip-flops or water shoes to protect your feet from the hot sand.
